Although many people in Southall speak languages other than English, we do not see this as a barrier to learning.
The education at St Mary’s School is in English, but English will be taught by stage not age, meaning that children learn English with others at a similar level as themselves. The school uses a number of strategies, including reduced class sizes for phonics, to allow children to make the best progress. There is a strong emphasis on literacy and careful thought has gone into our whole school approach. The speaking and writing of good English is an important priority for the school.
The language in common scale has been used to assess English as an Additional Language (EAL). You can download further information here.
